LLS Magic Companions guide: finding, taming and riding the Magic Snail, and dyeing the Wandering Eye
Where the Magic Snail and the Wandering Eye spawn on Minecraft Bedrock, how to tame each one, how to saddle and ride a snail up a wall, and how to dye an eye's iris any of sixteen colours.
LLS Magic Companions adds two creatures that are more interesting once they’re yours: the Magic Snail, which lives on walls and carries you up them, and the Wandering Eye, a floating eye you can dye any of sixteen colours. This guide covers where to find them, how to tame them, and everything you can do with them afterwards.
It’s written against the companions as they ship in the Magic Pack 1.3.4 and in the standalone Magic Companions 1.2.1. Both have the same two creatures. Use one download or the other in a world, not both.
The Magic Snail
Where to find one
Snails spawn on the surface in small groups of three or four, and the biome decides the shell:
| Shell | Biomes |
|---|---|
| Lava | Hot and dry: desert, savanna, badlands |
| Ice | Cold: frozen biomes, taiga, anywhere snowy |
| Earth | Wooded: forests and jungles |
| Aqua | Underground, in lush caves |
The fifth, original shell isn’t found in the wild. It only comes from a spawn egg.
What a wild snail does
Each snail decides once, at random, what kind of snail it is, and remembers:
- Wall snails, about four in five, look for a wall at least two blocks tall, climb to a height they like and cling there for one to five minutes, sidling about, before climbing down and finding somewhere new.
- Floor snails read the light and shuffle toward the darkest spot they can find.
Leave a group near your base overnight and they’ll sort themselves out: some on the walls, the rest tucked into the shadows. The one you see on the north wall every morning really is the same snail.
Taming
Hold a brown or red mushroom and use it on the snail. Each try has a 40% chance, so bring a few. A snail clinging up a wall climbs down to take the mushroom from you.
Once it’s tame, a snail has 30 health. Mushrooms also heal it, 6 health each. It’s leashable, and you can name it with a name tag.
Saddling and riding
- Hold a saddle and use it on a tame snail (without sneaking).
- Use the snail with an empty hand to get on.
On the ground the snail is slow, but steady:
- It flows up ledges a block and a half high without jumping.
- It shrugs off most falls.
- Dash (the jump button) is a hard lunge forward, on a three-second cooldown.
Climbing walls
This is what the snail is for. Ride straight into any wall two or more blocks tall and the snail latches on. From there:
| Control | Does |
|---|---|
| W / forward | Climb up |
| S / back | Climb down |
| A / D | Sidle left or right along the face |
| Sneak | Get off |
Looking around doesn’t break the grip, so you can look over your shoulder at the view without falling. The camera changes while you climb so the wall doesn’t fill the screen.
A snail makes cliffs, ravines and the outside of your own tower into roads. It’s slower than a ladder, but you don’t have to build one.
The Wandering Eye
Where to find one
Wandering Eyes spawn in swamps, in small groups. They float, bob in place, and drift off to look around when nothing’s going on. They never land, so they never take fall damage. A wild eye has 10 health and flees when it’s hurt.
Taming
Hold an Eye of Ender. Wild eyes are drawn to it and float toward you. Use it on one: each try has about a one in three chance.
A tame eye:
- doubles its health to 20
- follows you, keeping within a couple of blocks, and catches up if you get more than ten away
- heals 4 health from each Eye of Ender
- can be named and leashed
Eyes of Ender take an ender pearl and blaze powder each, so taming an eye costs something. Keep it close.
Dyeing the iris
Use any of the sixteen dyes on a tame eye and the colour goes into the iris, not over the whole eye. An ink sac works for black too. The colour is permanent and kept per eye, so it survives reloading the world and every eye in a group can be different. Dye it again whenever you like.
Why your eyes are crying
With the Magic Pack’s sulfur dungeons in the world, every Wandering Eye, tame or wild, weeps when a hoggoyle is near. That includes a hoggoyle still pretending to be a statue, which makes an eye an early warning: a field of eyes all crying at once means something is about to wake up.
It works both ways. Hoggoyles hunt Wandering Eyes as well as players, so take a tame eye into a dungeon knowing it’s a target. Without the dungeons in the world, eyes never cry.
Troubleshooting
- The snail won’t climb: the wall needs to be at least two blocks tall, and you need to be riding it, saddled, straight into the face.
- I can’t find any snails: check the biome table above. Snails don’t spawn in plains, oceans, the Nether or the End, and the aqua shell is only underground in lush caves.
- Invisible creatures, or purple-and-black ones: the resource pack isn’t switched on in that world. See how to install Bedrock add-ons.
- A big group of snails: they’re paced so they don’t lag the world. Only one snail per dimension does its thinking at a time.
