Bedrock add-on not working? Fixing update and version problems

Import failed, invisible or purple mobs, a pack that does nothing after a Minecraft update, or two add-ons fighting. What each one means and how to fix it, including how to read the Content Log.

Most add-on trouble on Bedrock comes down to a handful of causes: a version mismatch, a pack that isn’t switched on, two packs loading the same thing, or a script error that Minecraft hides unless you ask to see it. This guide goes symptom by symptom.

First: what version am I on?

Minecraft Bedrock changed how it numbers versions in 2026. Updates are now named by year: 26.50, 26.52, and so on. Inside the game files the same update is still 1.26.52. They’re the same thing.

  • The title screen shows your version in the bottom-right corner.
  • Every LLS mod page shows Requires (the oldest version it runs on) and Tested on (the newest version it’s actually been played on).
  • An add-on that says Requires 1.21.60 runs on 1.21.60 and everything after, including the 26.x updates.

Phones and consoles sometimes get an update a few days after PC. If an add-on needs a version your device hasn’t received yet, it won’t import or won’t work until it does.

“Import failed”

The file got damaged or renamed on the way. A browser or a phone sometimes saves an .mcaddon as .zip, or an interrupted download leaves half a file. Download it again, make sure the name ends in .mcaddon, and open that.

It needs a newer Minecraft. Every pack says which game version it needs. If yours is older, the import fails or the pack shows a warning in the world settings. Update the game.

You opened it from inside a zip app. On Android and iOS, open the file from the Files app (or Share → Minecraft on iOS), not from inside an app that has unzipped it.

“Duplicate pack” or “already installed”

That exact version is already in Minecraft’s library. Nothing’s wrong: go to the world’s edit screen and activate it.

If you’re trying to update and still get this, the new file has the same version number as the old one. Delete the old one under Settings → Storage (Behavior Packs and Resource Packs), then import again.

Mobs are invisible, or blocks are purple and black

The game has the behavior pack (what things do) but can’t draw them.

  1. The resource pack isn’t switched on. Edit the world, open Resource Packs, and make sure the add-on’s pack is under Active.
  2. The resource pack is an older version than the behavior pack. After an update, check both show the same version, and delete the old one from Settings → Storage.
  3. A rendering error in the pack. Bedrock throws out a whole mob’s appearance over one bad line, and only says so in the Content Log (below). If the first two are fine, that’s a bug in the add-on: report it with the log.

The add-on does nothing after a Minecraft update

New items exist but nothing happens when you use them, or mobs stand still: that’s the script side not running.

  • Add-ons on beta scripting break on updates by design. Beta APIs change with every release. An add-on that tells you to switch on the Beta APIs experiment can stop working the day Minecraft updates, and only the author can fix it. LLS add-ons use the stable API, which keeps working across updates, and need no experiments.
  • Experiments switched on that the add-on doesn’t need can change how the game behaves. Try the add-on in a fresh test world with all experiments off.
  • Check the Content Log. A script error shows there with the file and line it happened on.

Reading the Content Log

Minecraft keeps errors from add-ons in a log, but hides it unless you turn it on:

  1. Settings → Creator.
  2. Switch on Content Log GUI (errors pop up on screen as they happen) and Content Log File (they’re saved to a file as well).
  3. Load the world again and do the thing that’s broken.

On Windows the log files are saved in %APPDATA%\Minecraft Bedrock\logs (paste that into the File Explorer address bar). Look for lines with [error] in them. A few useful ones:

In the logMeans
[Molang][error] … Unexpected number of parametersA bad animation expression. Bedrock drops that mob’s whole appearance: it goes invisible.
unknown variableAn animation line read a value before it was set. Mobs go pink or invisible, and it can lag the game.
TypeError: ... is not a functionA script written for an older scripting API, running under a newer one.
requires a newer versionUpdate Minecraft.

You don’t need to understand the error to use it: copying the first few [error] lines into a bug report usually tells the author exactly what’s wrong.

Two add-ons fighting

The same content loaded twice. Some downloads are bundles of other mods. Having both files installed is harmless, because Minecraft only loads packs that are active in a world. Switching both on in the same world loads the same blocks, mobs and scripts twice. For LLS mods:

BundleAlready includesDon’t also switch on
Farm Sim PackMissing Blocks, Night LiteMissing Blocks, Night Lite
Magic PackMagic CompanionsMagic Companions

Every mod page lists its own clashes under Don’t stack with. Anything not listed there works alongside every other LLS mod.

Two different add-ons changing the same vanilla thing. If two add-ons both change, say, the vanilla player or the vanilla horse, only one of them wins. In a world’s Behavior Packs and Resource Packs lists, the pack higher up the Active list takes priority. Move one up or down to choose which; if both need the change, they can’t run together.

A world won’t load, or crashes after adding an add-on

  1. Make a copy of the world first (edit screen → Copy World) and test with the copy.
  2. In the copy, deactivate add-ons one at a time until it loads. That tells you which one it is.
  3. Report it to that add-on’s author with your Minecraft version, device, and the Content Log.

Console players

Xbox, PlayStation and Switch can’t install add-on files. If an add-on isn’t on the Marketplace, the only way to play with it on console is to join a Realm or a world hosted by someone on PC or mobile who has it switched on.

Still stuck?

Ask on the Discord. Say which device, which Minecraft version and which add-on, and paste any [error] lines from the Content Log. If you haven’t installed the add-on yet, start with how to install Minecraft Bedrock add-ons.
